And The Oscar Goes To... Chernobyl Heart!

1 Mar 2004
Chernobyl Heart won the Oscar for 'Best Documentary Short Subject' in Hollywood last night.

The documentary features the work of the Chernobyl Childrens Project, a featured charity in our Hearts and Minds area which has long been supported by U2 - notably with the release of the single 'The Sweetest Thing' in 1998.

'Chernobyl Heart' is about the after-effects of radiation on the children of Belarus, a country affected by the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. It was filmed 16 years after the disaster and follows the plight of radiation-exposed children being cared for in cancer centres, asylums, hospitals and orphanages.

"I feel you are also honouring the people of Chernobyl who are suffering the effects of radiation still, 18 years later," said Director Maryann DeLeo, receiving the Oscar.
